About Pierre Merville

I received my MD from the University of Bordeaux (France) in 1991 with a specialization in Nephrology. During my PhD, I studied the final stages of B lymphocyte differentiation in the Schering-Plough laboratory for Immunological Research directed by Dr. Jacques Banchereau. I received my PhD in 1997 from the University of Lyon. I became Assistant Professor in Nephrology in the Department of Nephrology-Transplantation-Dialysis in the Bordeaux University Hospital in 1998, then Professor in Nephrology in 2000. I am Head of the Department of Nephrology-Dialysis-Transplantation-Apheresis in Bordeaux University Hospital since 2015.

My research / PhD / Post-doc / projects

My research activity takes place in the ImmunoConcEpT headed by Dr Julie Déchanet-Merville in Bordeaux University. Many of my studies focus on CMV infection in kidney transplantation. Our research group is particularly implied in gamma-delta T cells response and their functions in the context of organ transplantation, during viral infections and carcinomas, and modulation by mTOR inhibitors. My clinical team is also strongly implied in the management of sensitized recipients, in collaboration with the Immunlogy and Immunogenetics Laboratory of the Bordeaux University Hospital. I co-authored more than 150 publications in the field of kidney transplantation and human immunology, and I am engaged in the training of medical students and interns. I review papers for several international transplantation journals and for medical research funding organizations. I am regularly invited to present our work in medical congresses.
